Anesthesia Sedation Instructions

Instructions Prior to Sedation

You have selected, after a consultation with the doctor, to have your procedure performed using an intravenous (IV) anesthetic. In order to make this a safe and uncomplicated part of the procedure, we ask the following:

  • There is nothing to EAT or DRINK for six (6-8) hours prior to the surgical procedure. Any deviation may require the postponement of the anesthetic.
  • There should be a responsible adult to bring you and take you home from the office. We prefer that your escort stay in the office during your surgery and be prepared to stay with you for the first 4-6 hours after your surgery as you may need help caring for yourself during that time period.
  • If the doctor did prescribe medicine to be taken prior to the procedure, use the smallest amount of WATER possible to swallow the medication.
  • The surgical suites in our office remain quite cool. For your comfort, please dress appropriately with warm clothing, sneakers or flat shoes, along with minimal jewelry and make-up.
  • Ask the doctor if you should take any of your other medications the day of your surgery.
  • Afterwards, even though you may think that the anesthetic has worn off, minimal effects can last all through the day. The medications can impair your reflexes and judgement. Plan on spending the day at home. No driving for 24 hours.

Our goal is to provide you with a safe, pleasant and effective anesthetic. In order to do this, it is imperative that we have your full cooperation. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office at (772) 223-0600.
