Medications to Avoid

Before & After Surgery

Below are a list of the more common medications that may need to be discontinued prior to any surgery. Not all medications are able to be listed so it is IMPORTANT to have ALL your medications cleared with the doctor prior to your surgery. If you have any questions about any of the medications you are currently taking, please call our office at (772) 223-0600.

Bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva, Aredia, Didronel or Zometa are a class of drugs that inhibit the action of bone resorbtion. Its uses include the prevention and treatment of disease of bone (osteoporosis) and cancer therapy. If you use a bisphosphonate medication you should advise your dentist. In some cases, having a dental procedure performed while taking a bisphosphonate drug may cause a detrimental condition call Osteonecrosis. In order to avoid this risk to our patients, a blood test can be ordered and will let us know the risk to you of developing osteonecrosis after a dental procedure.
